Day one of period

I always have been told that day one of a period should be any type of spotting. I actually have never counted day one as that. My day one is the next day when there is physical red blood. Sorry for the info. I know it's oversharing. I usually don't really see much spotting the day before it's just a little brown when I wipe. Should I really be counting that as 1?
