Pooping a lot?

I have heard when you start to poop a lot that's your body cleaning itself out. Has that been true for you ladies? I'm 36 weeks and have been constipated but the last 2 days I have had contractions and now I go to the bathroom like every hour or two. Could baby girl be coming? I go to Dr tomorrow but he won't check me until 37 weeks.
