Period cramps

Since early this morning (I'm in aus) I have been experiencing period cramps on and off.. Sometimes worse then others. I rang a midwife and she said it sounds like my cervix is softening and I may experience a "show soon" with my mucus plug. Has anyone had period cramps and then gone into labour? Or not gone into labour? I have no idea what to think right now ! first time mumma here! i
