pregnancy test help.. too soon to test ?

its been 30 full days since my last period &for years up until last month cycle my period came ever 20-25 days. so im considered about 5-6 days late. i took 2 dollar store tests last weekend and they were both negative. was it too soon to tell? should i try a better test right now?

lots of sex last month around ovulation and had brown spotting the 20th off & on since the 28th (ish). we are trying to conceive/have been for 2 yrs
