Pain Relief After Vaginal Tearing

If you had to be stitched up after delivering vaginally, what did they give you (if anything) to ease the pain? Did you still feel much pain during the stitching up? I was given a local shot and something stronger through an IV yet still seemed to feel everything. 😣
