Nervous for first time!

Me and this guy have been kind of seeing eachother for a little bit and we were about to have sex for the first time two nights ago but I found it really painful so we couldn't end up doing it, was this due to nerves because I know there's no such thing as being too small? Because I have no issue masturbating or anything but it was just when he went to put it in it was this really intense aching pain 😔 we're going to try again but we are both virgins so any advice is welcome too!
