hair dye question

So at the moment I have a full head of highlights and a half head (idk what you'd call that 😂) so my hair is basically blonde. However my roots are really bad at the moment and as the upkeep is too annoying I wanna dye it my natural colour but myself rather than professionally. Do I have to grow out the blonde or will it be fine to dye over as it's just bleach and toner.
