Brief nursing?

Question

Is it normal for my 5 week old to nurse for 5 minutes or less at a time? She nurses almost every hour. I just feel like she should be nursing longer. I know she's getting milk because I can see it pour from the sides of her mouth sometimes when she nurses

Mine is a lazy nurser too. I give him bottles for regular feedings so I know he is getting enough. Then I nurse in between. I wasn't creating enough milk initially and he stopped peeing and lost too much weight so now I'm pumping and nursing.

Has she always nursed like this or is this new? Does nursing hurt? Does she have a good latch? Does she fuss while feeding or spit up a lot? Does she fall asleep while nursing?

If she falls asleep, I would tickle her feet or switch sides or change her diaper to get her to wake back up. You can also nurse skin to skin so she is a little less warm and cozy. You also might just want to make her wait a bit (if you can take it- I'm talking ten minutes) so she gradually gets hungrier and eats more at once.

She should be feeding longer try tapping her nose softly. If she feeds longer she will eat every 2-3 hours.  Feeding time should be 15-30 minutes.

My boys been a 5minute feeder since 3 days old (hes 7.5 weeks now) n gaining weight fine n my supply is fine :) hes just efficient.

My baby girl is 6 weeks as of yesterday and she started doing this too the last few days. It worried me a bit but she is still pooping and peeing enough so maybe she has just gotten more efficient in sucking the milk out quicker:/

This sounds exactly like my daughter when she was just born. Turns out she had an upper lip tie and wasn't able to fully close her mouth so she would get tired really quickly. Once I had it fixed she was able to breastfeed longer and didn't need to nurse as often
