Husbands Ex-wife

My husbands Ex-wife wouldn't talk to me for the first 2 years that him and I were together and just recently we started exchanging a few words here and there. They have a daughter together and she is my stepdaughter who I love like my own. I would like to send her a nice message saying something about how we might not like each other but I'm glad we can be civil and communicate. But I would like to say it in a good way and with more words but I cannot figure out how to word it! Please help!
