Would you recommend the IUD for a teenager?

I'm 18 (basically an adult, not a teenager lol) and been on the pill for just over a year when I started being sexually active. I sometimes go months without having sex, so I feel like the pill is not reliable at all to me since I have to take it everyday and have sex every couple of weeks. Although it's been working great and haven't had any side effects at all whatsoever, I feel like something that I don't have to worry about daily would be more reliable. Any inputs?

I had the iud at 20 without ever having a kid and I loved it. I hated remembering the pill and it made my periods worse.

Depends which one, I currently have the copper IUD and 5 months after getting it I've had insanely painful cramps for three weeks straight.

Look into the Skyla IUD... I haven't had any kids yet and it's the one I had for almost 3 years ( it's good for up to 3 years at a time). It's the smallest IUD they offer so it was less painful.  I loved it! I will definitely get another IUD after I have a baby.

Like with any medications or forms of birth controls there are risks. As long as you are fully informed on what side effects/risks there are, then talk it over with your doctor and see what would best suit your needs. A word of caution with the implant though- I've read that in rare cases you could still get pregnant while having it in- and obviously it would compromise the pregnancy. But like I said- those cases are rare, I just read that in an article not so long ago and thought I'd share. Good luck!

Some drs won't offer in IUD if you are under 25 or have not had a child. I have had IUD's for 10yrs and it was the best thing for me. Reliable contraception and helped with my heavy periods.
