Head support for car seat necessary?

So I have an infant car seat for my son. I was just wondering if a head support insert was necessary?

Some carseats come with their own. You don't want to buy anything that goes in the carseat like that (for example, covers that go between the baby and the back of the seat etc), and definitely not anything that wasn't made by the carseat company and specifically tested with the carseat model that you bought. If you find the baby needs some more support, rolled up receiving blankets beside the baby are a better option.

Most car seats warn you not to add any cushions or headrests unless it came with the car seat. Something extra can render the restraints less safe.

If it didn't come with the car seat don't use it. Car seats are designed for specific height and weight limits (inlcuding lower limits). They're also tested with all padding and inserts if they come with it. After market products haven't been tested with your car seat and generally are not recommended and can in fact void the warranty on your car seat. As previous poster said- if you're worried about support use two receiving blankets rolled up like tootsie rolls and place them along each side of your little one after you've buckled them all in. In Texas, and I imagine most states, there are certified technicians that will do a complimentary review of your car seat installation and review vehicle safety when traveling with kids. I suggest taking advantage of the service. Research shows most car seats are used incorrectly.
