I have both a swing and rock n play. My daughter loves her rock n play and its the only thing she sleeps in right now. Later on we will see how she likes her swing.

Buy one second hand, and it's absolutely worth it. Rock and plays are nice, but they grow out of them much quicker, and swings are good for chilling and looking around and for sleep, where as rock and plays are more for sleep since they are laying down.
