Which is worse - skin lightening or darkening?

Why is skin bleaching a bad thing yet tanning is a good thing. Why is someone who bleaches seen as ashamed of their color and race but someone getting a tan isn't seen the same way.

Centuries of warped beauty standards that favour light skin over dark. Tanning ~can~ naturally happen whereas skin bleaching is never natural. Idk Michael Jackson said the same thing but I don't really think they're comparable.

I dont think either is bad. Skin bleaching is usually african americans, and because of racsim(which is something people obviously dont want to deal with if given the option) people think that they do it because they are ashamed of their race or are trying to be something else. But i think they can still love who they are and maybe just personally prefer lighter skin. Im super pale and fake tan, doesnt make me ashamed to be white or mean I'm trying to be hispanic lol. I just think i look better with some color, makes me more confident. Some black people are more confident or prefer to have lighter skin, more power to them. Doesn't mean either of us is ashamed of who we are.

I put both, but jk! Spray tanning places aren't bad! Many actually use a sugar base. The only tanning place I've ever been too is like that. Idk about other, but others probably do the same. Skin lightening with bleach is definitely more of an issue.

I think they can be just as bad but people hardly see tanning as a negative thing. (Plus it can happen in a natural and safe way.) The area I live in has a lot of people from other countries including the islands. In the beauty supply store there are rows and rows of bleaching products. I once watched a documentary on skin bleaching in Jamaica and it was incredibly interesting and upsetting at the same time. Not sure if it's really popular anywhere else but I know it is there.

Beautiful skin is beautiful skin regardless of color but the fashion and beauty industries have a fucked up idea of beauty. A gorgeous smile on a happy face is beautiful, expressing real emotion is beautiful. The color or shade of your skin does NOT determine your beauty. Be you because YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL.

I'd say because skin bleaching isn't a natural process? If I go outside in the summer, I tan. To bleach your skin you have to use special creams or have procedures done.

I've personally never heard of anyone looking down on it though.
