Has anyone been successful with a DIY charcoal mask?

I make them with a little bit of glue and a little bit of charcoal powder. (This appears to be the most common home method). It never seems to work for me! It'll pull out all the little hairs but no blackheads or anything :/ Maybe I just don't have any to be pulled out?? Thoughts??
