Is occupational pay based on experience helpful or harmful?

I selected both. I get that more experience should be rewarded, but it contributes to the ongoing pay disparity women face, as we're far more likely to have gaps for both child care and care giving of other family members like aging parents.

Also, I don't know about other fields, but I've found that the only real way to get a foot in the door with mine is to work without any pay at all for a time. It's a practice that needs to end.

It's both imo, because how can one gain experience if one is not given the opportunity to obtain what that company is looking for. And one cannot always obtain an internship because there are factors that may hinder that experience from coming to life.

You can have an employer with 10 years experience who cuts corners and doesn't do a good job. You can have an employee with 1 year of experience that goes above and beyond and does a great job.

But you also have very knowledgeable experienced people that deserve good pay. So I selected both.

I think it can be helpful depending on the job. I currently have 6 years of experience in my field. The job I'm doing now takes about two years to be fully trained.

I'd hope that I could earn more money than someone who doesn't have the same experience. My manager has 39 years (!) of experience, so she should earn more than someone just out of college. But I'm sure there are other jobs out there which don't require specialized skills and you can train someone new and have them up to speed within a few weeks.

My husband has so many technical licenses bc research showed that some have high wages. So we paid and he went thru the course graduated and did everything he had to do. To find out without experience no one will higher him. So how the hell do you get experience if no one will give you a chance? Frustrating. I get starting at bottom but sometimes there's no bottom. He got one job with license n company worked him everyday n would under pay him or refuse to pay him bc company said they didn't have the money to pay him. Smh. So def can b harmful. I understand someone with certain amount of experience worked hard to get where they are but realistically there should b a better way to get experience thru companies

Both! It's beneficial for the employer for them to have experience but can hurt the people applying for the job who don't have experience and are just starting out.
