Do you really know what "first world" means?

I keep seeing "first world" and "third world" thrown around. I recently saw it on a post and thought I should share. I wonder why and how we diverted from the meaning socially

Well our country was raped and ravished by multiple countries who took away all our wealth and they have the balls to call us third world after emptying our resources in a demeaning way

Honestly, I had no idea. I've always refrained from using the term because I just didn't know. Someone once told me it was determined by how much electricity a country uses. I didn't think that sounded right.

Reading this post and something I researched from another post made me realize that these developing countries have a lot of structural violence among them and it makes me look at the IS and theses countries in a different light.

I knew this only because one day a professor at my university went on a 30 minute rampage because someone used the term "third world" incorrectly in a statement. I'll never forget the definition after he almost had a stroke in front of us 🤣

I do know that but americans use it all the time, so I adapt the way I refer to poor/rich countries in this app.

I thought these terms were outdated and it was more appropriate to refer to countries with high amounts of poverty and less infrastructure and economic well being as "developing nations". I'm not sure if that's a fair assessment either though.

I'm from a third world country which is not considered a developing nation.
 
It's weird to me that my friend were literally schocked by the level of poverty and said "I didn't know there was still countries like this" like... What?
