Can I take my purse and a backpack on a plane?

We bought stuff on vacation and don't want our luggage to be over weight so I'm issuing my regular purse as well as a backpack.

You're allowed one personal bag and one carry on. The personal bag needs to fit below the seat in front of you. The carry on needs to fit into the overhead bins.

I fly a lot, and they always let me take my purse on, as well as a carry-on bag, as long as the bag isn't too big. If it's a standard-sized backpack, that should be fine!
