last name?

Okay so I am pregnant with my first baby. I am not married but I am still with the baby's dad who is of course my boyfriend. So my question is, when the baby is born whose last name goes on the birth certificate? I would love to use my boyfriends last name, but I am nervous something might happen later on and he ends up leaving me. And if tht were the case I would want the baby to have my last name. My boyfriend and I both plan on being together forever and I really hope tht is true, but I have to face reality and realize tht sometimes plans change. Anyone had the same problem? And how did u deal with it?

You should be able to have enough faith in the father of your child to not worry about him leaving. Personally I would give the child his last name, because he's the father and that's where they came from regardless. Plus you can always change your child's last name later on if you must.

When my husband and I had our daughter before we got married I just knew that no matter what, she should have his last name, because he deserved to carry on the family name, and he had proven to me that he would always be there for us. I knew that one day we would get married, and we would share the same last name.  We got married when our daughter was almost 3.

Do what you feel is right, hun. Personally, I've always known that no matter what I'm giving my last name to my future kids, regardless of whether I'm married or not. If you feel like your child should have his last name, then give it to her. It's all about what you feel is right.

Your baby should definitely have the last name of their father. After all it is their child as well! Or maybe you should hyphenate the babies last name with both your last name and daddy's name! My niece has both her mothers name and my brothers last name hyphenated into one, my brother and her mother aren't together anymore! xx

Honestly you're going to find yourself in a complicated situation with him if the baby doesn't have his last name. He will get mad unless he agrees then the baby can have your last name only. Or you can just deal with it and have both you guys last names

It honestly does not matter. My mom gave all of us our fathers' last names even though they weren't married when we were born. My brothers have the last name of their father, and I had my father's last name. But plenty of parents opt to hyphenate (which I personally despise hyphenated names - my dad was a title examiner and hyphens made his job 10x harder) or choose to give the child the mother's last name. But truthfully, it wouldn't matter. Your child is your child. A name is just a name. Talk about it with the father and ask what he wants. It's perfectly fine for parents to have different last names than their children. My brothers' name, my name, and my mom's name were all different - but we're still family.
