fraternal or identical?

Hi ladies,
Hoping someone can shed some light so when I had my first ultrasound at 8wks doctor told me I was pregnant w twins. 2 sacs so fraternal. Now that I found out I'm having 2 girls they say they aren't 100% sure bc the egg could have split early. Won't really be able to know until they are born and do a test? Has this happened to anyone else and does that sound right lol? I just want to know if they are identical or fraternal lol

Identicals form from a single egg that splits as we know. This cleavage can occur anywhere from the day of conception to two weeks after conception. If it splits during the first few days this is before implantation and both babies are identical and develop their own placentas and Amnions. These implant in different places in the uterus and are identical di/di twins.

If they split a few days later when they implant the placentas fuse and this becomes a shared placenta. You now have mo/di twins.

If the split occurs shortly after implantation you're looking at Mo/mo twins who share both placenta and amnion.

The latest split results in not only shared placenta and amnion but shared body parts as well. All are identical twins.

This diagram helped me the most. My di/di boys are identical, we had them tested as their Christmas present. Even though I can clearly tell them apart, people ask us all the time and I wanted to be able to give them a definite answer.

I'm having modi twins .. they are in two different sacs but share they some placenta so they are identical.

Yes that sounds exactly right. I'm having di/di twin boys. They each have their own sac & placenta but there is still a chance of identical because no one knows if the egg split in the first three days.

I was told this and didn't know till my boys were born. They were fraternal ... didn't look at all alike!

I'm having di/di twins and we know they're fraternal because at first u/s she looked at both ovaries and saw that both had released an egg and both had a corpus luteum (the cyst that grows after egg is released and produces progesterone until placenta takes over). So we know two eggs released and implanted. Not sure how long they can see that for though...

Yes. Same situation, I'm having di/di boys. Unfortunately, we will not know if they're identical until they are born.
