what does spotting look like

I'm not sure how much spotting can go. Is it like a light period or just drops of blood n the colors ? ? I know everyone is different but I never spotted with my first pregnancy. And yesterday I got a very faint line n was spotting lightly just drops here or there n when I wipes but now it's turning into HALF of a light-day just today n back to just drops. N I just don't wana mix it up with my period even tho it's not due til 8 more days but having a faint line , I don't wanna get my hopes up! So just trying to get advice!
