friends with your ex?

So me and my boyfriend broke up maybe 2 months ago and he is going through a hard time in his life right now and reached out to me for support. And we sort of went back to how we used to be when we were together. I still love him and I love being friends with him but is this a good decision? Are any of you friends with your ex's? We both agree that getting back together isn't the right thing to do. It's just hard :(
