waking a baby up to eat?

Hey ladies! My son is only 5 days old and he can sleep a good 4/5 hours it seems without waking up to eat. Some people have told me to wake him every 2/3 hours to eat, some told me to let him sleep and he will wake up/let me know when he is hungry. I feel bad because I'm not sure what to do! His last feeding I woke him up because it was pushing 4 hours and I wanted to feed him. I'm pumping and breast feeding and I am having to supplement with formula here and there. He's been asleep a good 3 hours now and I'm not sure if should wake him?

Let him sleep unless your pediatrician recommends otherwise. Sleep is important too.

I don't have my baby yet but have experience with family members and always understood that when breastfeeding in the beginning you should be trying to feed every 3 hours in the day to establish a good supply! If you are supplementing with formula you might not establish a good enough supply to feed baby on breast milk alone. Also, waking up baby to feed in the day but not at night will help to start to establish day time vs night time sleeping patterns (less sleep in the day and hopefully more at night). That is all obviously as long as baby is gaining weight appropriately of course! I hope that helps! I always say listen to everyone's advice and then pick and choose which bits work best for you! If he's gaining weight let him sleep. If not then wake and feed

5 days old and they want you to supplement on formula? It is a shame as this will influence your milk production. i am not surprised if he is sleeping so long then as he is probably very full because of the formula. They have tiny stomachs and so don't need that much. Go by the weight gain. As long as he is gaining 20-30gr a day, you are fine!
