best time to start buying baby items NO baby shower

When did you guys start buying gender neutral stuff and diapers, wash, baby wash etc for your baby? I'm 12 weeks Wednesday and contemplating it. I have decided I probably won't have a baby shower this pregnancy, with my son the amount of money I spent on a shower and food for barley anyone to show up just wasn't worth it to me.
