When will my Dr. tell me if Im dilated?

I'm already 38 weeks and 4 days and my Dr. hasn't told me if I'm dilated or anything, is that normal? Should I ask him? When I go he just does a normal routine check up, is it still too soon to know?

If you don't need it I wouldn't do it. It's extremely uncomfortable and can be painful. I've had it done twice with no change and I've been in pre-labor for weeks now. It sucks knowing you're not progressing when you're so ready to be done and have gotten your hopes up. Plus, crawling backward up an exam table and trying not to punch the Dr takes more effort than its worth lol

My dr checked me at 37 weeks and I was 1cm, I'm 41 weeks now and still 1cm. Personally, I would've preferred to never have been checked. It really doesn't mean anything in regards to when labor will start, it hurt like a bit@h (To me anyway, some women have no problem with it) and is quite discouraging when you hear that you haven't progressed dilation in 5 week. Kinda messes with you mentally. Next baby I will totally deny being checked, there is no point. Just my opinion/experience with it tho 😀 but if you ask your doc they should do it for you no problem!

Most practices have moved away from "routine" checks because they're not predictive of anything. People can dilate the first few centimeters weeks before they go into labor, or as they go into labor. Sounds like your doc is just following best practice and avoiding doing an unnecessary exam, but will probably check you if you ask for it!

I've been checked every week since 36 weeks by choice it didn't hurt at all for me nor was it all that uncomfortable but my midwifes office makes you ask to be checked or else they won't check

My office doesn't normally check until 41 weeks but I'm having them check at 39 and do a sweep if my cervix is favorable

Dilation isn't an indicator of when labor will start and there is no reason for a doctor to check honestly. I find it weird that doctors find it okay to stick their fingers inside a woman when it literally tells you nothing about impending labor..
