Against Their Wishes

Have you ever dated/are currently with someone whom your parents disapprove? Are their reasons valid? How did it work out for you? Would you ever choose a relationship over family, or vice-versa? I'm genuinely curious!
Little bit of background: I've been dating a wonderful girl for almost a year now. Well, I think she's wonderful. My parents are not enthusiastic about the relationship. They believe that I'm selling myself short, that I shouldn't commit to a serious monogamous relationship at such a young age when I'm so inexperienced (I'm 21 and this is my first serious relationship. I have had two brief relationships with two other guys), and they don't like the fact that she's an atheist. I love this girl and I want to give her the world, I just have a sinking feeling that our relationship is never going to be fully accepted by my family, and my girl and I are both concerned about me being alienated from them in the future if her and I decide to live together or get married. I could go on, but I'm really just curious to see how you all fare when you start to see someone who the rest of the family don't really care for. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! 😊
