Screening test for Down syndrome at week 10... Is this necessary?

I chose to not do testing. It's totally your decision. For us it wasn't going to change anything so we said no to all testing.

My dr offered me the "trisomy 21" test around 8 weeks. It's a blood test. It tests for Down syndrome and other chromosomal issues. She said insurance doesn't usually cover the test unless you are high risk. Apparently this test also reveals gender. I declined the test. Then at my 16 week anatomy ultrasound, the dr said that some things they saw were possible signs of trisomy 18, and I should get tested. So my dr ordered the trisomy 21 test, (which covers Tri 18 as well), and a week and a half later I happily got negative results, a gender confirmation, and my insurance covered the cost of the test. So it may be better to wait!

you don't "have to" but it is recommended you take any test. there's always a risk something could be wrong. especially if you have a history or you're over 30.

We are doing the test next week at 10 weeks. My husband and I will love and care for this baby no matter what, but we want to be as prepared as possible.

No.  I'm skipping it and waiting to do my first ultrasound at 18 weeks.  There are new studies out there about how ultrasounds aren't as safe for baby as we previously thought.  Also, I am young and there is no family history of chromosome abnormalities.

It isn't necessary, no. It's your choice of you want to find out or not. My doctor asked me a few visits ago and I decided not to because I was already high risk and if my baby did have a mental disability I didn't want to worry throughout my pregnancy if I had to do special things to keep my baby inside of me healthy until it got here. I decided I'll just go through it normally and wait and see. Autism is a thing in my family so if anything I would think it would be that and not downs.
