Is this normal with a 3 month pill?

I started a 3 month birth control pill 4 weeks ago, and have never taken this kind of pill before. I've had brown discharge for 5 days, and today it has started to be more regular blood. Is that normal with a 3 month pill? I read that breakthrough bleeding is normal but this seems like a normal period now.
