Have you ever had a deep dental cleaning before? Not a regular cleaning, a deep one. If yes, what was it like?

My husband is a dentist, and I know when he does scaling and root planing, he typically divides the patient's mouth into 4 sections. He administers local anesthetic (just like if you were getting a filling or crown) and will only clean 2 quadrants at a time for the patient's comfort. This type of cleaning is to help prevent any further onset of periodontal (gum) disease which can result in tooth loss and bone regression in your jaw, as well as a slew of other health issues. These cleanings (as well as your normal 6 month hygiene visits) might have to be done a few times, it depends on what your dentist recommends. He also advises these patients that they need a good electronic toothbrush since manual brushing isn't enough. He likes the Sonicare line. Also, flossing is important. The oral b reach flossers that they sell at Walmart work fine, but good old fashioned floss is the best. Hope that helped provide some insight.

Hi ! I can help! My husband is a dentist and I am a Hygeinist. What are your concerns?  Deep cleanings are very normal procedures. They will numb you in all 4 sections of your mouth (if you are doing it all in one day... some people break it into 2 appointments so they are not completely numb at once) after the numbing the worst is over... you will feel nothing during the cleaning which gives your Hygeinist the opportunity to clean deep into your gums and clean out all of that bacteria that could be causing bone loss and recession. Once your done you will most likely get a prescription bottle of mouth wash for any type of discomfort after the fact (remind you... they are going really deep into your come so some experience a little discomfort) (not all) and all you have to do is try to keep up with your cleanings (perio maintainence) every 3-4 months.
