mice problem

I am literally have a nightmare with mice, I haven't been able to get rid. I got glue traps which I know are so cruel but they didn't seem to work, it got stuck and ended up pulling itself off.. they run around my trap basically and avoid them. They're clever mice lol.. but now it's got too much this morning I woke up to droppings at the end of my bed which means it was on my bed whilst I slept. Which I didn't think they do, does anyone know of ways I can get rid of them without getting an exterminator in? I don't really want to be finding dead mice or them dying in the walls and smelling because the smell is something else!.. but it's something I'll have to do if nothing else works because I can't even sleep peacefully
