Is it racist to call someone a "diversity hire"?

So I was at my desk at work yesterday and I heard the lady who runs HR say to someone that the new employee was a "diversity hire." She's honestly a pretty nasty old lady she talks shit about her assistant all the time saying that he's the "laziest Asian" she's ever met 🙄. Honestly I'm surprised she hasn't been fired but I'm just wondering if anyone else thought that calling someone a "diversity hire" was racist?

Yes, because it implies that the person isn't qualified for the job. Plus you'd never hear someone calling a white person a "diversity hire", so it comes from a place of white privilege to say that.

Sometimes that's what it really is. But it's not another employees job to state that. That's between the company and the "diversity hire" really it shouldn't even be a title at all.

I would file a complaint against that lady. Also contact the BBB about it as well. I couldn't work with someone like that. Have your opinions fine, but keep them to yourself.

Honestly though, some people really are "diversity hires" and that is what pisses me off. Colleges do this especially.

There are diversity requirements that businesses have to meet overall, but it's still wrong to call an employee a "diversity hire". It implies they were only hired to meet the quota, instead of for their qualifications and abilities which a candidate should be judged by.
