custody in ga and dc

I'm located in dc but the father of my child is in ga. How can I obtain full custody of my child. He beat me while I was pregnant with her and went to jail. But I was told he still may receive some custody rights and visitation. I don't want him to have any he's already stated he doesn't care about her he just wants me to be miserable over the phone. My daughter also has no clue who he is she's 8 months old now.
