How do you feel about the word queer? How do you define it in your own words?

You know, I'm not actually sure.

I don't view "queer" is the same way I view f*g, d*ke or tr*nny. Though I know it did originate as a derogatory word.

I've seen the word used by both LGBT+ people and non-LGBT+ people. For example, the term "queer baiting" seems to be used by anyone regardless of their identity.

I mean, as opposed to the slurs I mentioned before, I think the word "queer" only becomes offensive depending on how it's used. It's the difference between:

"They're queer."

"They're a queer."

I think the latter sounds more offensive.

I'm personally straight so I don't really know. I'll leave that decision up to those who fall under those categories.

If the person defines themself that way then I'd use the term if they have a different term preference then I'd use that.

Some people have reclaimed the word, some people cant let go of its origin as a derogatory term. If you're worried about offending anyone then just don't use the term! Better to be safe than sorry.

It's used as an umbrella term in a lot of the community to signify anyone who isn't cis-hetero. Like most words (including gay) it has a history as a slur, but it's by and large been reclaimed and (as long as you use it correctly) is no longer offensive to most.  It also has a history of use in academia, where one studies Queer Literature or Queer History etc. But again, it all comes down to respect, so if an individual tells you that they don't like to be referred to a queer, you have to respect that and refer to them in the manner of their choosing. Likewise, if that person meets someone who DOES like to be referred to as queer, it's not their place to tell that person they can't use the word. Queer is a really useful term for people who would prefer not to get into specifics about their identity, and people telling them they can't use it is pretty damn annoying. (*cough*in my experience*cough*)

I've asked specifically and was told it's in the delivery and intent. If someone identifies as queer and you exchange the term gay for queer they do not mind. Clearly if it is used as a slur or accusation it's a totally different story.

I find that it's the intent. The LGBTQ+ community uses it as an umbrella term but I do still hear people use it in a derogatory way so it can be many things, depending on who is saying it and why.

It becomes far less empowering when half the people using it to define themselves are straight asexuals and hets w kinks or whatever. Its a slur to be reclaimed by lgbt individuals only, and thats people who are attracted to the same gender and/or are trans and straight cis ppl are forgetting this definition somehow???? whats worse is that its an expectation now to identify as q*eer and used as an umbrella term like.. honey..... LGBT is fine...yknow

i don't use it personally and it makes me uncomfortable. i tried it for a bit but it doesn't fit right and also i just feel kind of dirty using it. i don't mind if other people use it because obvi like it's your choice. i just don't like it personally. the only time i care when other people use it is when it's referring to me. no thx

It's been reclaimed in some spaces and not in others. Plus there's individual preference.

I tend to use it, but I will apologize and correct myself if it offends you - like no biggie. For me, altering my language for those around me isn't a big deal.
