Obesity: Modern Epidemic?

What about the strain on our Finances? Read this article:

Plain and simple, Medicare and Medicaid spending would be 8.5 and 11.8 percent less in the absence of obesity. Obese people spend 42 percent more on healthcare than healthy weight people.

Do we have a health crisis on our hands? How can we get healthier as a nation? Is the FDA responsible for the crap allowed in our food? And "mind your own business" or other choice words are not an intelligent response... Especially when as a taxpayer we are all funding these costs.. So it is everyone's right to have an opinion. What is yours? How do we get healthier?

Actually a bigger strain on our healthcare system isn't obesity itself (which is a symptom of a larger problem) but actually poverty. A large percentage of people can't afford regular healthcare, even with the ACA in effect right now. And that means that enough people STILL can't go to the doctor when they need to, and can't afford to pay the bill when they do go. That means they're going to work sick and injured and hurting which puts a strain on the public because it helps to spread diseases. Then you have people calling out all the time because of untreated sicknesses or injuries. That costs businesses money. More dependency on already overworked social services. Poverty means not being able to afford actually good or nutritious food because you have to stretch every dollar to the breaking point in order to have enough food to last until your next check. Poverty means having unchecked mental health issues like Depression and bipolar disorders run rampant because you can't afford to get the treatment you need. All of these points have two things in common. Poverty and obesity. Obesity doesn't cause these issues. Obesity is just a symptom, a side effect. Poverty is one of the root causes. (Please bare in mind, I am all for body positivity and health at every size. Or not. It's okay to not be healthy too. You're still a person deserving respect.)

When it comes to food there is definitely a problem. It's a cultural thing. North America is obsessed with things being quick and easy. So it just makes sense that there is a McDonald's on every corner and people stuff there faces with crap. It also doesn't help that a salad is like $5 but a burger is 99 cents.

Unfortunately crappy food is usually cheaper and "faster" and fits in to our (as a nation) busy lives. I make a huge batch of salad so it's always ready, less of an excuse to eat something quick which is normally horrible for me lol

A major problem is with what our country allows in food! There are so many chemicals that are allowed in our food that are not in other countries. Maybe there wouldn't be a huge epidemic if the FDA was more concerned about health and not money!!
