Did you let your cat around your premie baby?

Question

If you could explain why or why not id like that. I was told to get rid of my cat before i bring my son home. But i figured if i cleaned everything multiple times and filter the air , it'd be safe for him to come home.

I have 2 cats and wouldn't get rid of them (unless it turns out baby's allergic or something)

They don't even come near my son, they're afraid of him. I never leave him alone with my pets tho.

I have two 13 yr old cats, and a three yr old one with 4 kids. My kids grew up with our cats, and my last son, he's 5 now, was a premature baby. His pediatric pulmonologist said there shouldn't be a problem since my immune system was exposed to cats during the pregnancy and my household too. Brought him home and they were curious about my maternal son but I never let my cats get on him and the cats were allowed to roam the house like always but just not when I was sleeping or the baby was, they were kept out the room, I would let them get near the baby of course just not unsupervised cuz my cats snuggle and they are pretty heavy cats so I didn't want an accident. I don't have pics on my of my kids with my cats as a babies but I have recent pics of my grown preemie with one of our cats. They bonded instantly and she loves my son and they sleep/hang out together. People told me to get rid of the cats, still do cuz I'm high risk of preterm(stopped twice at 23 and 29 weeks) just reached 33, but my Drs gave me the green light and I love and my kids love our cats and with precautions to can keep both, kids and cats, safe.

My cats didn't go near my baby til he could crawl after them!!

In the old days when babies were outside in the pram (uk)  cats found prams a cosy sunny place too sleep!! 
Never heard of any modern day cat killing baby stories!!

Do some google. The cats stealing baby breath, or going after the milk smell theory, has been debunked over and over. The people who say it's a risk "have heard it" because it's an old wives tale. Is it possible? Sure. But far more deaths are linked to babies suffocating when the parent rolls onto them while cosleeping, or by leaving a blanket/pillow in the crib. Cats don't try to kill babies, but they do sometimes like to cuddle them. I wouldn't leave any pet alone overnight with my baby, but I'm also not concerned about my cats trying to murder my baby. =/

That said, being a premie might require more research. I know kids who are around pets from a young age are less likely to develop allergies later in life. But I would need to know more about how it might impact a baby whose lungs/immune systems aren't fully developed yet.

The old wives tale of cats suffocating babies is just that. I think the biggest problem with having a premie in a house with cats is the air quality. Pet dander and cat litter dust/urine particles can be hard on people with weak lungs.

Nothing wrong with pets around babies, it'll actually help with allergies and such. Just keep an eye on them and shut baby's door when sleeping because cats do look for any heat source and will lay on them.

In general, you never want to leave any animal alone with your baby - the risk of suffocation or injury is always present unless you're there to watch. Same goes for dogs

Cats are known to suffocate babies. They smell formula/milk on the babies and try to lick it off of them and end up smothering the baby. That doesn't happen in every situation and you may not notice it at all. It's actually healthier for children to be raised with pets so they can build immunities again allergens, unless you notice it bothering your baby you should have nothing to worry about.

I have two cats and 29 month old daughter and pregnant with a second baby! My daughter loves the cats and they love her! When she was a baby they never approached her unless I was close! Pretty sure they avoided her cause they didn't know what she is lol.. now they cuddle with her and my daughter is the healthiest toddler ever even with two cats and being in daycare every day of the week.
