Seeking Birth Control Advice

I have been having sex with my boyfriend with condoms for about a year and I would like to go on birth control for extra protection. I don't know what kind to get and I'm nervous about the possible side effects. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice/what kind you use. Thank you. :)
