Should they be treated?

So I was watching a show called 'mind the age gap' where young adults and old adults live together and discuss certain topics.

In the U.K. our healthcare is free however private healthcare is not. A question popped up and I wanted to know other people's opinions. Assume you live in the U.K. or your healthcare is free.

Question that was asked: "if someone comes to our country with a life threatening illness should they be treated by our NHS?"

I can see both sides, I personally think it's wrong for people to purely come over here to take advantage of our healthcare, however who are we to turn away someone who clearly can't get healthcare in their home land.

The NHS is very stretched and has been for a long time. But what are your opinions? Poll answers, Yes- they should be treated, No- they shouldn't and Unsure. Post comments to explain your answers!

I don't think it is fair to not treat someone. I understand the concern for people taking advantage, but if it's a life or death situation, I don't see why you'd want to deny someone of their life.

I voted no because the people that pay for the NHS are the taxpayers in the UK, not the visitors. It's messed up if someone went to the UK just to get "free" health care that is being paid for by the citizens.

You shouldn't turn away those that need help. As it stands the UK makes attempts to get payment off these people but rarely successfully. In my opinion, if they can't pay it then becomes their country's responsibility to pay and they need to then take that up with their citizen. The UK is too soft and it is crippling the service they offer.

I think they should be treated, I also find it really unlikely that it is a common phenomenon that people who have life threatening illnesses move to the U.K. to get treated..the cost of getting citizenship and moving would likely balance out the health care cost ...

Why is it the other countries responsibility? If you allow one, you allow them all then your paying taxes out the ass for other countries people.

The only people I know who are willing to go across seas to receive medical attention are already on deaths door. So of course I would say yes treat them, but as they are foreigners and just traveling maybe they can get the treatment at a reduced cost?

I don't live in the U.K., much as I'd like to be somewhere in Europe, in Sweden or Denmark so my ability to respond to this is limited, but ultimately I can't feel well knowing people who are treatable are dying because they can't afford treatment, and would want something in place that generates some revenue from their treatment but not in the way the US attempts to glean every penny from you.

I'm really unsure.. I think that opens the door for people to take advantage of foreign health care. If u can afford the $1000s in travel expenses why weren't u able to afford a payment plan? That'd be my first red flag. Then the type of care they were seeking, etc. emergencies in a foreign country 100% think free health care should be available. But then again what qualifies as an emergency? The best solution would be to provide health care world wide which I'm not opposed to. Major corporations and business should provide at least minimal health care to their employees, and pubic assistance on health care for those who are unemployed or disabled should be available as well world wide. That would avoid people taking advantage of other countries, just another thing people could add to the list of things "rotten Americans" do. 😬😬🤷🏻‍♀️
