I come first within reason of course. It wasn't an easy switch for my husband but I gave him sometime.

I come first. But his mother is his mother and she isn't ignored or disrespected to accommodate me. Your specific situation... she needs money for the baby shower YOUR baby shower, so that's about you anyhow. What do you need has for? If money is that tight right now is there a way around you needing gas money? Can someone pick you up? Take a bus/ train.. wait a couple days? Avoid driving somewhere unless it's absolutely necessary? And if Money IS that tight why not get a job and pitch in and then you won't have to ask for gas money. As far as MIL coming to your house just explain to her yourself that you are uncomfortable with it and you are kind of a private person. Ask her to call first or give you notice. And who gave her a key?
