contractions? help

How do I know if I'm having contractions or when to call a doctor. I'm 36 weeks and I have light cramping in my abdomen and the right side of my stomach keeps hardening and then soft but it just feels like the baby is leaning against that side and then moving away idk if it's that or if it's contractions ? I'm confused

My rule of thumb, if you have to question it it's probably not labor. You will most likely know when it's labor because those contractions are no joke. Towards the end of pregnancy, you get cramps from your body preparing.  You could also be having Braxton hicks.

You're having Braxton hicks or the baby is just moving around. When you're in labor, nothing you do will stop the contractions, they'll get more and more frequent and stronger. With Braxton hicks they can hurt but over time they'll go away especially if you drink water and lay down.
