Elective induction?

Question

Would it be terrible to plan on an induction? I know many women are against induction and it can cause long labor, ect but I can't help but be worried about taking maternity leave and wasting a couple weeks of it without a baby.....if I plan it I can plan my maternity leave to start around then. Is that selfish??

A doctor won't induce just because, there need to medical reasons, ex. Overdue or high bp etc. Why not work up until u have the baby? I worked up until push time. Literally answering emails after my epidural.

Most will do it at 39 weeks and up. That's what my OB said... I was induced at a little over 39 weeks and there wasn't a medical reason other than the fact that my entire pregnancy was miserable and she actually offered induction.

No, with my second she was planned induction because she was sitting on my nerves and it was to painful to walk. I couldn't do anything even take care of my son because I couldn't move!!

Induction can cause long and painful labor because your body hasn't had the time it needs to prepare itself, so it's forced to prepare quickly- which is painful.
Often, women will start dilating without any pain and they could be 3 or 4 cm dilated before they even start feeling contractions. Then by the time they're in active labor, they might be 6 or 7 cm dilated and then things start to move quickly. When you are induced, you're going to be thrown into active labor right away, but may not be dilated at all yet. Also, the baby feels every contraction you feel. Induction causes harder, more painful contractions which is uncomfortable for you and for Baby too. Not to mention, Baby can only tolerate so many of those intense contractions, so they start to get distressed before it's time for you to push them out which is why c-section rates go way up with inductions.
It seems to be more efficient and less painful to allow your body to go into labor as it's ready. It also seems to be better for Baby because they're not enduring as intense of contractions for a long period of time.
HOWEVER, inductions can be incredibly helpful. It's super cool that we have the ability to induce people for both medical and convenience reasons. No matter what, in this day and age you're probably going to have a healthy baby regardless of if you induce or not. If the convience of knowing exactly when this baby is coming is a priority to you, then by all means, be induced!

I don't think it's selfish.. but talk to your doctor or midwife about possibly doing a membrane sweep first. I was one week away from my due date, 4cm dilated, and we were expecting a heavy snow storm and I was all alone because my husband was working out of state... my doctor did a membrane sweep to get things moving along. It worked quickly for me but may not for everyone... my baby was born 7 hours after.

I don't know exactly how it works but I just told my employer my due date and that I was expecting to work right up until my water breaks (it never did, I had to be induced at 42 weeks). It's a okay-by-ear kind of thing. I think, legally, maternity leave doesn't start until you stop coming into work because you've given birth. Check with FMLA or your HR.

My doctor did induce me with both of my kids when I elected and it was two days before the due date with each one of them everything went pretty well but on my third baby when I chose to have her induced I had to have an emergency C-section so just be careful what you're doing and my doctor was a fetal maternal specialist that worked with high-risk pregnancies he has been doing it for 40 years so he knew what he was doing somethings just don't happen how you plan I would suggest just letting the baby come naturally it really  is better

I would have rather they induced with this big guy but they don't do that in VA hospitals for some reason. Excuse the boobies lol. Only one I can find right now of him when he was a little bit. Can't tell but he had a HUGE head as well 😩😩
