late period

Hi!! I've been having changing body temperatures for several weeks now and my period is 4 days late, the doctor says it's because of my forgetting to take my birth control. I've never been penetrated, But have had skin contact. I don't think I'm pregnant but my period is late what should I do? Do the diy pregnancy test work?
