Would you want to bring back branding?

Question

Branding being those who have committed a crime, for example, murder-M, rape- R, abuse- A (I know these probably aren't the technical letters but just as an example).

Another question: did you agree with it at the time it was acceptable or do you think it's wrong?

Please note, I understand it speaks about slaverly and I do not wish to offend but this question is purely in relation to crime, this includes the other question.

No. I don't believe anyone convicted of a crime should be branded. It's not needed. Sex offenders register upon release. Murders that are convicted go to prison. Felons disclose on job applications after release. What does it matter to me if the guy in front of me online at Dunkin was convicted of robbery 15 years ago? I mean, would you run away screaming every time you saw someone branded? What would be the point other than to punish them which we can assume was already done based on their sentence after conviction.

Why brand them at all? Waste of time. And putting them in prison is a waste of our money. Murderers and rapists deserve the death penalty. Plane and simple.

I do not think that branding should be allowed solely because I believe people can come back from their mistakes and become a better person. Why should someone who changes for the better and others be constantly reminded that the person has a bad past?

No. Labeling ppl does not help for either party. It leads to more crime being committed, discrimination, and it devalues the person as less than a human being. They removed it, because labeling theory " an interactionist perspective that sees continued crime as a consequence of limited opportunities for acceptable behavior that follow from the negative responses of society to those defined as offenders"(Schmalleger, 2009, pg. 311).

I good case to read is James Hamm, an ex con who served his time, received his degree did not get into trouble while in prison; was paroled and passed law school admissions test was unable to become a lawyer because the parole board refuse to terminate his parole, because he was labeled as a criminal.

The worst thing to do too a juvenile is label them as criminals through stigmatic shaming " a form of shaming, imposed as a sanction by the criminal justice system, that is thought to destroy the moral bond between the offender and community", this is why juvenile records are sealed. The very behavior society deems unacceptable by labeling them the very thing that will affect them and persuade them to act accordingly.

Labeling criminals is no means to an end, nor does it stop the perpetual cycle of deviant behavior.
