Premature Births and Autism: True Link?

Question

I'm a FTM. My son was born at 30 weeks. Doctors told me there may be some risk my son could jave autism, but he wouldn't develop signs until he turned 3. The worrying about the unkown drives me mad.

Well, he's  about to turn 2 now. I worry about this possibility. Is it true? Anyone with premature babies tild this?

I intend on doing some research, but I also wanted to know thoughts here as well?

My son was born 25wks he has chronic lung disease, had had heart surgery laser eye treatment and he's also got a grade 4 brain bleed. Premature babies are at a lot greater risk of: autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, developmental delays, speech delays and also mental health issues when older

No one knows what causes autism so 🤷‍♀️ sounds like your doctor is full of shit and you should get a new one/find a second opinion.

the strongest posibility of a child having autism is genetics and even that isnt a guarantee! there is a lot of worry about children with autism and how horrible it is. truthfully my fiance has it and you would literally never know, the ONLY thing that is even semi noticable is that he has a harder time processing emotions. if im upset, he wont know unless i tell him or am crying. hes extremely high functioning, literally like 99% normal. just the emotions thing lol

Well since the brain doesn't fuse together until the last two weeks and can only do so correctly in the womb I can see this being true. Id love to research it more!

My nephew was born at 24 weeks. He's our miracle baby and a fighter. He's now 15 and he is mentally delayed and was just diagnosed with a form of autism.

Just wanyed to thank all that replied bacl to me. You settled some bad nerves and gave me a lot to think about. I'm nervous about a possible autism diagnosis, but thanks for helping me see it wouldn't be the end of the world. I thank you for yhe advice as far as what to look for and handle it.

Autism mom here of a 12 yr old.

At age two does your son just point to things he wants, how big is his vocab, is he verbal, how about his physical as far as occupational skills. Have you taken him to a neurologist to get a test done. They can sedate him and put him with some patches and wires they can see his neurons. Connections etc, what about a psychologist.  Also does he speak to himself. Does he memorize things. Is he very repetitive. Does he tip toe when walking. Does he get frustrated that ppl can't understand him. Is he fascinated by something. For example ocean animals. Countries, maps, leggos.

Go to an autism seminar learn more about it evaluate your own kid and reach out to a professional. Sorry to say your doc is an idiot. Nothing about a kid being born early has been proven to say it causes a child to have autism.

Your son could have been born at 40 weeks, 41 weeks,  37 weeks,  his changes are still the same.  My friend had her twins at 29 weeks,   in 4 months they will be 5.... no signs at all, i don't  understand  why the dr found  the need to make u nervous.

I was born at 27 weeks. I suffer from severe BPD, depression, and anxiety, I had a g tube until I was 3, severe eye issues and multiple surgeries (I have very poor eyesight and astigmatism), I had to be taught how to use my tongue and mouth to eat and talk, I have unilateral sensorineural hearing loss and wore a hearing aid (still supposed to wear it, whoops) and I was supposed to be a vegetable and never be able to walk or talk and be confined to a wheelchair my entire life due to cerebral palsy. I also had a grade three brain bleed and wore a helmet, among other issues. When I was born I was put into the NICU for quite a number of months and I have pick lines throughout my breast and general chest area, and since there's only so much area on a premature child they ended up accidently inserting one into my right breast bud, causing the breast to never have developed. (C cup in one and nothing in the other is a pain in the ass and causes back pain, especially with being pregnant, and I wonder how that'll affect breastfeeding once the baby is born... Guess we'll see) I say all of that to say this- yes being premature definitely has a higher rate of having such issues like I have, but sometimes even throughout the struggles and issues there is good. I was never supposed to be able to have gotten pregnant and I'm currently almost 16 weeks with our first. I've found that going through those trials have made me have a different outlook on life, because honestly I'm not even supposed to be here, much less pregnant, haha. Sometimes I wish I was like other people, but hell, I've gotta enjoy what I've got ☺️

Most babies in my family this generation have been premature (34,32,35,27 weeks) and none have showed any signs of autism
