It prevents newborns from developing a vitamin k deficiency since they're born with very little vitamin k - this deficiency can cause life threatening bleeding.

Like the other poster said, it's not a vaccine. It's like giving your baby a vitamin dose of a vitamin it's malnourished on.
Just as important as you taking prenatals, etc.
