Why are technical colleges viewed so negatively?

In my experience, people don't see technical schools and colleges as very good. My brother joined one for electrical work. Everyone he would meet would ask where he goes to college and when he'd say he goes to a technical school, people kind of just go "oh..." And then give a fake smile and go about their business. My hig school offers a program where I can leave halfway throughout the day and attend a technical college that's focused in a particular field. I want to do animal science so I can go on to study marine life. My parents don't want me to because they think it's for the "bad kids" or the kids who won't be able to get into a college. The students at my school seem to think the same. I don't understand why technical colleges are looked down on so much.
