Essential oil in laundry

I use free and clear natural laundry soda because I try to steer clear of the dyes, chemicals, and perfumes. However, we definitely miss the sweet smells that other laundry detergents leave on the clothes. I'm wondering if anyone has experience with adding essential oils to loads of laundry. I'm worried about it leaving oil spots/stains. Any opinions?
