To hire or not to hire a doula?

Question

I am a first time mom debating if I should try and hire a doula to help me through my delivery (hopefully unmedicated delivery). Has anyone had negative or positive experiences with hiring a doula?

We had a doula and loved it! My husband was like a deer in the headlights the entire delivery, it would have been terrible if it had just been us. 
I really like that she helped us into better positions and after the delivery my husband was very shaken up as it was pretty terrible with a bunch of interventions. So it was nice for him to go for a walk and get something to eat and she stayed with me. 
I would recommend one for any first time mom because you just don't know how it will go and how your husband will be.

I had a doula and found her to be more helpful/ supportive than my husband. Needless to say, I will have one for this birth as well:).

Absolutely hire one! It is so helpful and my husband was so glad there was somebody else there too. We are hiring the same lady again this pregnancy. Not only is it really nice, but studies show your chance of having a c section and all sorts of other problems are much lower!

Doulas are the best. They help with you and your husband/support person. My first was unmedicated and my doula knew exactly what to do to make me feel better - counterpressure, different positions, ice, etc. Worth their weight in gold!

I say it depends .... my husband was amazing during the birth (unmediated) of our daughter. So I was happy that we were able to do it together without a doula.

I had a doula for my first and she was really helpful until i went into labor and didn't hear from her until after I had my son. I learned it was unnecessary and i was glad we didn't have to pay her for what little we used her for
