Waste of time and money??

I'm so conflicted on whether or not to get something for my dad for Father's day or not. I got him a tarantula that he said he wanted for his birthday in January. I didn't want to take it to my house because I'm afraid of spiders so I bought everything for it and paid for it and the place I got it said he could just come pick it up. Well, he said he would go get it and told me he did. I got a call a week later saying he never came to get it... So he totally wasted my money and everything and didn't want my gift at all. He always gets mad when I buy him stuff... We don't have a good relationship and I actually think he hates me. So should I just not waste my time and money??
