Is it safe to take Advil on an empty stomach?

Question

Sometimes when my period starts I wake up in the middle of the night with really bad cramps and back pain. Is it okay to just take 2 Advil (400mg) even though I'm not taking it with a meal? 
I know it's best when NSAIDs are taken with food to,reduce chance of internal bleeding.
Also, my period is a week early and quite painful. Should I be worried?

I will throw up if I take Advil on an empty stomach. What works for me is having crackers/granola bar on my bedside table that I'll eat when I wake up from cramps and then just take the Advil. Once in a while it probably won't hurt, but you never know and it really is a good idea to follow the instructions with medication.

Ive asked nurses i work with this and they just tell me it may cause an upset stomach if you do... maybe eat some crackers with it or something lol I usually take it and dont even think of when i ate last and nothing bad has happened yet

Thanks for the tips everyone! Yeah I just wasn't sure how much food is "enough" to neutralize it. A granola bar/crackers is a good idea, I'll keep those around.

Apparently you shouldn't but I have on so many occasions and I'm fine. I guess it's okay if it's a one time thing.
