Do you agree with mandatory lock down of cell phones in a middle school? Read description

A middle school in my area is making it mandatory for all students to put all electronic devices in their lockers. They are providing locks to avoid theft. I see no problem with taking a child's electronic device if they are being disruptive with it, not paying attention, etc. But it makes me nervous to think an entire middle school would not be able to contact parents or police in case of an emergency. The world is crazy and there are school shootings, bullying, I've seen videos of teachers hitting children, and so many other incidents.. I personally would switch my child's school...

Most classrooms have a phone in case of emergency. There's no reason for kids to have phones on their person while in class.

My mom used to work at a bad school (multiple lockdowns every year because of neighborhood issues) and she's said that the worst part is when students tell their parents about it before the school does because it makes it harder to deal with the actual emergency when there are parents worried and showing up. The school will notify if something happens.

I don't know how I made it through my whole entire life of schooling without a damn cell phone! I think it's OK for them not to have it in classrooms. There was a point in time where there was no such thing. And bad things did happen back then, they just were not exploited to the point that they are now.

Yeah, I agree with the rule. Students turn phones in at the office and pick them up at the end of the day. Works fine. There are phones in every room and all the teachers I work with have a cell in extreme emergency cases. It was mentioned in another reply about students using them to play a game assigned in class by the teacher. The same game can be done with school iPads that have proper privacy locks, etc. I've seen more cyber bullying going on right in front of me in schools I've subbed in than I care to admit. (I reported it to admin each time.) I've seen students snapping photos and taking videos of teachers who are lecturing in the middle of class and then making fun of them online. I'm sorry but free cell phone usage in class is not a necessity and sadly there are too many who take advantage of it. Many school kids have lived fine lives without a cell phone at all in the past and they survived through emergencies without one.

My kids school is a no cell zone so even if you have your phone you don’t get reception inside the school each classroom has 1 phone and there are phones in the hallways the school also has an intercom system that the teacher can access to make announcements

Back in "the day" (im only 22 so this wasnt even that "back") nobody had cell phones until they were in highschool. Theres no need for students to have their cellphones on them. You may say in case of an emergency but the teachers all have phones as well as most if not all classrooms having a landline. We live in such a technology dependent world its nuts. When i was in highschool if teachers saw you phone it was taken and placed on or in the teachers desk. I dont mean they see you playing on your phone i mean if they see the phone at all its theirs.

Maybe a better solution would be that they put it at some place in classroom. We used to put ours on the teachers desk or in a box. This is really an interesting topic, there pros and cons to both sides for sure.

I grew up without a cell phone. Got one when i was old enough to buy my own in the late 90s. We were fine, hardly anyone had them back then and its not like we sufferes for it. This is even in the wake of Colombine when bomb threats were twice a week for months. I agree that when emergencies happen, having  500 cell phones each telling a different story makes handling said situation much harder on first responders. Theres just no need to have them in the classroom.

I disagree with it, just because I think that kids need to learn to manage themselves so that they're not distracted by phones etc. If they're always locked up in the morning, then kids aren't experiencing the whole temptation of checking their phone and learning how to minimise their distractions. It's good practice for when they're older and have to do more studying independently, or when they're at work. If a teacher sees a student on their phone and punishes them, it's a lesson for that students and others in the classroom. I work in education and hate seeing kids on their phones during lessons, but it's part of learning to be an adult I guess
