Breakup after boyfriend relapsed

Today my boyfriend of one month broke up with me. I'm 19 but he was my first boyfriend and things were going great until about a week ago when his alcoholism started getting bad again. I wanted to support him through it but he kept saying I deserved better and that he doesn't want to drag me through his addiction. I know he had the right intentions and was just trying to keep me from getting hurt later on, but I'm heartbroken because I know neither of us wanted to break up.
